This is just stunningly beautiful.
It’s pretty rare that I get excited about contemporary popular music. Not for lack of trying. I do make an effort to keep my ear to the ground and my mind open. I’d hate to be some cranky old fart who thinks all the good music stopped happening after I turned thirty. But it’s not often that a new pop record actually makes my neurons fire, much less a Sub Pop release. I hadn’t heard of Loma until a friend in Portugal posted another song of theirs on FB today. I liked it enough to dig deeper and soon found this gem. I’m a sucker for this kind of dreamy, unabashedly arty song-based music. (See also Hugo Largo, Low, Mark Hollis, etc.) And I love it when something comes out of nowhere and genuinely surprises me. Isn’t that the feeling that all music geeks are constantly looking for? Their new album, for which this is the title track, will be released on October 23.
